Preity G Zinta is back to Pilates; why should you give it a try too?

Pilates can be an extremely rewarding fitness routine that not only takes care of your niggles but can help you streamline your progress. As such, when Preity G Zinta shared that she was back at the fitness bay with Pilates, we couldn’t keep calm. “So nice to be back in the bay ?? I know you missed me Yas,” shared Zinta alongside a video snippet that shows her practicing some of the Pilates exercises with Pilates trainer Yasmin Karachiwala.

In response, Yasmin shared in the comments section, “You know I love training you ?? especially the part when I don’t let you talk.”

Taking a leaf from their fun fitness session, we decided to revisit some of the Pilates fundamentals with our in-house fitness expert.

How to ace Pilates?

Just like any other fitness activity, focus on proper form and controlled movements. “Gradually progress through exercises, prioritise core engagement, and ensure proper breathing. Consistency and precision are key for optimal results,” said Garima Goyal, a fitness expert, adding, one should consider taking classes or working with a certified instructor for personalised guidance.

*Begin with a solid understanding of Pilates principles: concentration, control, centering, precision, breath, and flow. Familiarise yourself with the core concept, emphasising the powerhouse—engaging abdominal, pelvic, and lower back muscles.
*Practice foundational exercises like the Hundred, Roll-Up, and the Single Leg Stretch. Mastering the basics establishes a strong foundation for more advanced movements.
*Pay attention to proper alignment and execution of each movement.
*Progress at your own pace. Gradually increase the intensity and complexity of exercises as your strength and flexibility improve.
*Include a variety of Pilates exercises to target different muscle groups and prevent monotony. Explore equipment-based Pilates, like using reformers or stability balls, to add diversity and challenge.
*Consistency is crucial for success in Pilates. Establish a regular practice routine, whether it’s daily or several times a week. Regular sessions help build strength, improve flexibility, and refine your Pilates skills over time.

How many times is it effective to do in a week?

Committing to 2 to 3 Pilates sessions per week strikes a balance between giving your body ample time to recover and maintaining a consistent training routine, said Goyal.

– Recovery time – Pilates engages various muscle groups, and adequate recovery is essential for muscle repair and growth. Allowing at least one day between sessions helps prevent overtraining and reduces the risk of injury.
– Consistency for skill development – Regular practice is key for skill development in Pilates. Performing exercises multiple times per week reinforces proper form, refines movements, and enhances overall proficiency.
– Adaptation and progress – The body adapts to exercise through a process of stress, recovery, and adaptation. Training 2 to 3 times a week provides the necessary stress for improvement while allowing the body to adapt and get stronger between sessions.
– Balancing other activities – Pilates can complement other forms of exercise or activities. If you engage in different workouts, having Pilates sessions spaced out allows for a balanced fitness routine that addresses various aspects of physical health.

“Remember, the quality of each Pilates session is as important as the quantity. Focus on proper form, controlled movements, and mindful engagement during your sessions,” said Goyal.
