Chaat is understandable, as it is a delicious and flavourful Indian street food. However, it’s essential to maintain a balanced and healthy approach to your diet, even when enjoying your favourite foods. Here are some things to keep in mind when you love chaat a bit too much.

According to nutritionist Munmun Ganeriwal, Indian chaats are made of healthy ingredients like curd, sprouts, digestive spices like jeera, hing, anti-oxidants like tamarind, etc but because they are mostly deep fried and may consist of refined maida, the best time to eat chaat is 11am to 4pm.

According to Ganeriwal,

—Wholesome chaat options like Raj kachori, Ragda pattice, Chole tikki can be eaten as lunch

—Avoid having chaat after 5 pm (4.30 pm ideally!)

—Absolutely no need to go for air-fried versions of your fried goodies. Instead, consume them as is but in moderation (once in 7 or 15 days) and enjoy them guilt-free, said Ganeriwal.

Dr Dilip Gude, senior consultant physician, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad shared a few additional tips to keep in mind when relishing such savoury snacks:

Portion control

Enjoying chaat is perfectly fine, but practicing portion control is crucial. “Be mindful of the quantity you consume to avoid overindulging, especially if chaat is high in calories and fats,” said Dr Gude.

Nutrient balance

Chaat often includes a mix of ingredients like chickpeas, potatoes, yogurt, and various spices. “Ensure your overall diet includes a balance of nutrients, including proteins, carbohydrates, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals,” mentioned Dr Gude.

Choose wisely

Some types of chaat may be healthier than others. Opt for chaat varieties that include nutritious ingredients like sprouts, vegetables, and yogurt. Dr Gude too mentioned that it is advisable to avoid excessive fried components and focus on options that incorporate fresh and wholesome ingredients.

Homemade chaat

Consider making chaat at home where you have control over the ingredients. “This way, you can use healthier alternatives, control the portion size, and reduce the amount of oil and salt in your preparation,” said Dr Gude.

Mindful eating

Practice mindful eating by savouring each bite, chewing slowly, and paying attention to your body’s signals of hunger and fullness. This can help prevent overeating and promote a healthier relationship with food.

Balanced diet

Chaat can be a part of a balanced diet when consumed in moderation. Ensure that your overall diet includes a variety of foods from different food groups to meet your nutritional needs.

Physical activity

Regular physical activity is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Engage in exercise or activities that you enjoy to help balance the calories consumed from your favorite chaat treats, said Dr Gude.

Hydration

Drink plenty of water throughout the day. “Sometimes, our bodies can mistake thirst for hunger. Staying hydrated can help control unnecessary snacking,” said Dr Gude.

Occasional indulgence

It’s okay to indulge in your favorite chaat occasionally. Treating yourself occasionally can be part of a balanced approach to eating and can help you stick to a healthier diet in the long run.

Listen to your body

Pay attention to how your body responds to chaat and other foods. “If you notice any adverse effects or discomfort, consider making adjustments to your choices,” said Dr Gude.

Remember, enjoying chaat and other favourite foods is part of a healthy and balanced lifestyle when done in moderation. “The key is to make mindful choices, balance your overall diet, and engage in a healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity,” said Dr Gude.
