Does this DIY viral mask actually work like Botox?

Ever heard of ‘natural Botox’? The beauty realm on the internet seems to be buzzing about a DIY mask that claims to mimic the effects of Botox. Comprising mashed banana, rice flour, and curd, this viral mask has social media users swapping syringes for kitchen ingredients. But does it live up to the hype? Let’s delve into the truth behind the mask.

While a face mask prepared from mashed bananas, rice flour, and curd can improve skin health by delivering key nutrients and stimulating exfoliation, it cannot replace Botox, said Dr DM Mahajan, senior consultant, dermatology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi. “Botox paralyses muscles, which reduces the appearance of wrinkles generated by muscular contractions. The natural chemicals in the mask may improve skin texture and luminosity, but they do not have the same muscle-relaxing properties as Botox.”

Dr Henna Sharma, a consultant dermatologist at Yatharth Hospital, Noida, acknowledges that the potassium in bananas might offer a temporary tightening effect, akin to Botox’s quick plumping action. “However, it’s temporary and won’t address long-term muscle relaxation or deeper wrinkles.”

So, what are the actual benefits of this DIY mask?

According to Dr Monica Bambroo, head- dermatology & cosmetology, Artemis Hospital, Gurgaon, this viral face mask can contribute to a more radiant complexion, smoother skin and improved hydration, making it appealing to those seeking natural skincare solutions.

“Mashed bananas are a vitamin powerhouse (A, B, and E) with antioxidants promoting elasticity and combating free radicals. Rice flour, known for exfoliation, removes dead skin cells, unclogs pores, and brightens the skin. It can also absorb excess oil, making it suitable for individuals with oily or combination skin. Curd, a natural source of lactic acid, gently exfoliates, promoting a smoother texture and benefiting the skin’s microbiome with probiotics,” she explained.

Despite its popularity, the viral mask is not suitable for everyone. “Individuals should be mindful of potential allergic reactions to any of its ingredients. The acidity in curd, a component of the mask, may cause irritation, making it unsuitable for those with sensitive skin. Moreover, people with severe acne or rosacea are advised against its use,” Dr Sharma warned. As a precaution, a patch test before the full-face mask application is advised to ensure compatibility with your skin.
