Decoding Taapsee Pannu’s ‘Dunki’ diet: ‘Diversity has always been the key point in her meal planning’

Unlike her characters in movies like Haseen Dillruba or Rashmi Rocket wherein she had to either tone down or bulk up; for the character of Manu Randhawa in the recently released Dunki opposite Shah Rukh Khan, Taapsee Pannu didn’t have any specific requirement of a body transformation. “However, the challenge was different,” recalled her nutritionist Munmun Ganeriwal in an interaction with indianexpress.com.

Firstly, the schedule for Dunki was spread across two years in 2022-2023 and the film was shot in various locations like London, Jeddah, Pune, Mumbai, Budapest, and Kashmir. Secondly, for most of the schedules and at most locations whether it was London, Saudi Arabia, or Mumbai, she was shooting during extreme heat waves. Ironically, because they were portraying the winter season in the movie, she had to wear sweaters and woollens in the scorching heat. “Though I kept changing her diet as per the shoot location, special emphasis had to be laid on this front so that there are no chances of heat exhaustion or heat fatigue,” revealed Ganeriwal.

Breaking down her diet further, Ganeriwal said she made use of vetiver roots which have cooling properties.

Ganeriwal said, “That helped regulate body temperature and prevent excessive sweating. This makes them an ideal choice when shooting in hot climates.”

Taapsee Pannu was also sipping on variyali sherbet, which is one of the traditional coolant beverages, to combat extremely hot weather conditions throughout shoots. “It is traditionally a fennel-based drink sweetened with rock candy (khadi saakhar), but I also use black raisins in this recipe for her. This helps beat heat-related challenges like acidity, indigestion, etc,” said Ganeriwal.

The Udupi ellu juice made with white sesame seeds, coconut, and cardamoms was also one of the options. “If you ask me, it’s a perfect summer drink,” quipped Ganeriwal.

For her food, Ganeriwal kept on changing it depending on where the Bollywood actor was shooting. She was, at times, alternating Dunki shoot with the shoot of Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, so accordingly the diet had to change. “There was a good balance of carbs, proteins, fats, fibre, and fluids. Her meals aren’t completely gluten-free but we incorporate gluten minimally only so that there’s room for other grains and millets. Diversity has always been the key point in her meal planning,” Ganeriwal said.

Taapsee Pannu’s fitness regime, as most people know, is medium to intense. Her routine comprises a mix of weight training, cardio, and playing squash.
