In a world inundated with dietary advice and nutritional trends, the concept of powerful food combinations is quite underrated. However, research suggests that certain foods, when paired strategically, can enhance nutrient absorption, improve digestion and amplify the health benefits of individual components.

For overall wellbeing, if you’re looking for food combinations that go well together and increase each other’s benefits, nutritionist Apurwa Agarwal in a recent Instagram post shared foods that must be eaten together to boost health.

1. Tomato and avocado

Pairing avocado with tomatoes is not just a culinary delight — it’s a nutritional powerhouse. “The monounsaturated fat in avocados makes the cancer-fighting lycopene in tomatoes four times more powerful,” says Agarwal. This combination not only elevates the flavour of salads and sandwiches but also maximises the bioavailability of key nutrients.

2. Apple and dark chocolate

Apples with dark chocolate not only tantalise the taste buds, but also contribute to a well-rounded diet. “An anti-inflammatory crucial to heart health found in apples and powerful antioxidants found in dark chocolate fights blood clots, improves circulation and reduces your chances of heart disease,” explains the nutritionist.

To enjoy the food combination, melt dark chocolate and coat them on the apple slices or enjoy as a dip. However, it’s important to be mindful of portion sizes and opt for high-quality dark chocolate with cocoa content of at least 70% to maximise health benefits.

3) Lemon and green tea

Adding a splash of lemon to your green tea not only adds a refreshing touch to your daily hydration routine, but also supports cardiovascular health. Green tea, renowned for its antioxidant content, can be further enhanced by combining lemon. The vitamin C in lemon stabilises the catechins in green tea, preventing their breakdown and boosting the overall antioxidant power.

4) Chickpeas and beetroot

Whether tossed in a salad, blended into a dip, or included in a soup, chickpeas and beetroot complement each other well. “Chickpeas are rich in vitamin B6, a vitamin that helps the body absorb magnesium-rich foods like beets,” says Agarwal.
