Kareena Kapoor wows in vintage sari look that took 200 hours to make: ‘We preserved the original fabric without cutting it’

Kareena Kapoor Khan has never not impressed when it comes to fashion. The legendary actor marked her 25th year in cinema on September 18 with a stunning appearance. She chose a custom pre-owned vintage Banarasi sari drape by designer Amit Aggarwal, showcasing a unique approach to preserving and reviving this heritage fabric.

“Sourced from a cherished couple within the Rabari community, we meticulously transformed this pre-loved vintage Banarasi sari into a modern structured drape,” Aggarwal told indianexpress.com.

“Utilising innovative restoration techniques and careful pleating, we preserved the original fabric without cutting it. This process took 200 hours, resulting in a contemporary sari that honours the integrity and essence of tradition while embracing modern design,” the designer explained.

The designer added in an Instagram post that “the Hindu concept of re-incarnation inspired us to reimagine pre-loved vintage Banarasi saris into modern structured drapes.”

The meticulous pleating preserved the sari’s original length and design resulting in a stunning fusion ensemble with an off-shoulder look, complete with sinuous pleating creating a ruched waistline.

The gold Banarasi boota work sari seamlessly transitioned from a drape into the pleated gown, creating a contemporary reimagining of traditional Indian attire. The floor-length palla, embellished with intricate gold brocade, added a touch of regal elegance as it trailed behind Kareena.

While repurposing old Banarasi saris is a common practice in Indian homes, Kareena’s ensemble offers a fresh perspective, demonstrating how this timeless fabric can be reimagined for contemporary fashion.

Kareena complemented her ensemble with a set of moon-inspired tribal gold earrings, a necklace, and a cocktail ring, all adorned with Indian pink and emerald green acrylic. Her stylists, Rhea Kapoor and Shereen, ensured that every detail was perfect. They added a touch of vintage flair with sheer black net gloves. A gold-plated metal bindi from artist and jewellery designer Roma Narsingani completed her look.
