As Claire from Fleabag shouted in the middle of a breakdown, “hair is everything”- we couldn’t agree more! In an attempt to flaunt long, healthy tresses, people are willing to try out just about anything and everything under the sun. But before you embark on your haircare journey, know that hair thinning and hair breakage are vastly different and tackling them both require diametrically opposite approaches.

When asked what is the main difference between hair thinning and hair breakage, Namika Kant, Technical Expert at Envi Salons shared that hair loss and hair thinning refer to the loss of hair from the scalp, where hair falls out and stops growing. On the other hand, hair breakage occurs when hair breaks from the mid-lengths to the ends, below the scalp.

What leads to both of these conditions?

“There can be various reasons for hair loss and hair thinning, including but not limited to heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions or certain medications, aging, stress, and more,” shared Kant.

According to her, causes of hair breakage can include lack of nutrition, over-styling without proper care, excessive chemical treatments without appropriate protection, and not using the correct home care products, among others.

How can you combat hair thinning and hair breakage?

Kant shared that the cures and solutions for hair thinning vary depending on the underlying cause, and can range from home care treatments to medications.

“Solutions for hair breakage include maintaining proper nutrition, using good quality home care products, applying heat protectants before styling, and receiving hair care treatments in salons,” she said.

Common mistakes people make that lead to hair thinning and breakage

According to Kant, common mistakes to avoid for hair thinning include following crash diets or not maintaining a healthy diet, failing to manage stress or avoid stressful situations, and wearing hairstyles that pull hair tightly.

She said that for hair breakage, people often end up exposing their hair directly to external aggressors like sunlight and UV rays. “They do not not use heat protectant before heat styling, neglect proper home care, don’t follow a nutritious diet. Sometimes, they also skip conditioner while washing their hair, and use extremely hot water to do so,” she added.
