Cooking isn’t just a basic life skill- for many, it is as therapeutic as getting a massage, or just another medium of expression like indulging in creative arts. However, your dream of cooking up a storm may fall short owing to the fear of getting splattered by hot oil.

If you, like us, have been on the hunt for a hack that promises to keep you relatively safe from kitchen burns, indianexpress.com stumbled upon this video on the Internet. Digital creator Prachi Agarkar shared a reel on Instagram where she added a pinch of salt to heated oil to prevent oil splatter. How effective is this trick? Celebrity chef Ananya Banerjee shared her two cents.

According to her, adding a pinch of salt directly to the oil before adding the ingredients can sometimes reduce splattering. “Salt helps by absorbing some of the moisture, which is one of the main causes of splattering. However, it may not be completely effective if the ingredients are very wet,” she said.

Banerjee’s advice is to ensure that all ingredients added to hot oil are dry. “Any moisture on the ingredients, like spices or herbs, can cause the oil to splatter. Pat dry any fresh ingredients like curry leaves or chopped garlic before adding them to the oil,” she suggested.

Before adding ingredients to the oil, she advised reducing the heat slightly as this lowers the temperature of the oil and reduces the intensity of splattering. “Rather than adding all the ingredients at once, add them slowly and cautiously, allowing the oil to adjust to the temperature change,” she said.

What should you do if you get burned by rogue oil splatter?

Banerjee recommended following these immediate steps if you get burned by oil splatter:

– Run cool (not cold) water over the burn for about 10-15 minutes to reduce the heat and prevent further skin damage.

– Do not apply ice directly, as it can cause further damage to the skin.

– Once cooled, cover the area with a clean, non-stick bandage or cloth to protect it from infection.

– Don’t apply any ointments, butter, or oils directly on the burn immediately, as they can trap heat and worsen the injury.

– If the burn is severe or covers a large area, seek medical attention promptly.
