Often in the excitement of a new baby, caring for a mother might take a backseat. Dr Chetna Jain, Director–Dept of Obstetrics & gynaecology, Cloudnine Group of hospitals, Sector 14, Gurgaon, explained the first few days postpartum are a critical period for new mothers as they navigate the physical and emotional challenges of recovering from childbirth while caring for a newborn.

“During this time, it’s essential that mothers receive the support and care they need—not only for their well-being but also to foster a healthy start for their babies. Unfortunately, as the focus often shifts entirely to the newborn, new mothers can sometimes feel neglected or overwhelmed. Both self-care for mothers and proactive support from those around them are vital,” Dr Jain said in an interaction with indianexpress.com.

1. Rest, rest, rest

Rest is essential for new mothers as their bodies heal after the physically demanding process of childbirth. New moms should prioritise sleep whenever possible, even if it means taking naps throughout the day. Since the newborn’s sleep schedule is unpredictable, sleeping when the baby sleeps can help mothers get the rest they need, said Dr Jain. Creating a comfortable, quiet sleep environment and asking for support in caring for the baby can further enhance sleep quality.

2. Take care of your nutrition needs

A nutrient-rich diet is crucial for recovery, energy, and milk production if the mother is breastfeeding. Eating a balanced diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains ensures that mothers get the vitamins and minerals needed for healing. Staying hydrated is equally important, particularly for breastfeeding moms, as hydration aids in milk production and supports overall health.

3. Your emotional well-being is important

Postpartum emotions can be intense due to hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, and the demands of caring for a newborn. It’s common for mothers to feel overwhelmed, anxious, or sad during this period. Acknowledging these emotions and seeking support—whether through mindfulness practices, talking to a counselor, or simply taking time for self-care—can help manage these feelings. Mothers should feel encouraged to reach out for help when needed.

4. Share the load

Caring for a newborn is a shared responsibility. Partners, family, and friends can assist by taking on household chores, preparing meals, and helping with baby care. This support allows the mother to focus on her recovery and bond with the baby without feeling overwhelmed.

Emotional support from loved ones is invaluable, Dr Jain said. Listening to the new mother, offering reassurance, and allowing her space to express her feelings can significantly boost her emotional well-being. Being a non-judgmental, comforting presence can help her navigate the emotional rollercoaster of the postpartum period.

While it’s normal for mothers to experience “baby blues” in the early days, postpartum depression is a more serious condition that requires attention, Dr Jain explained. If you notice signs such as persistent sadness, anxiety, or withdrawal, encourage the mother to seek professional help and offer your support in finding resources.
