Bollywood actor Vijay Varma has candidly discussed his experience living with vitiligo, a skin condition that causes white patches on the skin. Despite facing initial concerns about how vitiligo might impact his career, Varma has embraced the condition and no longer feels the need to hide it.

In an interview with Times of India, Varma revealed that he used to worry about the condition when he was struggling to find work. However, as his career took off, he realised that vitiligo was not an obstacle to his success.

“See, I didn’t make a big deal out of it (skin condition). It is just a cosmetic thing, and it is not really anything that can change the course of your life. We make it a big deal because it is something that is out there, but I have never really made a big deal out of it. It used to worry me when I was an out-of-work actor. I would wonder if this would become an obstacle. But ever since I have been working and seeing a lot of success, it hasn’t bothered me.”

The actor has been open about his experience, sharing that he chooses to cover up the patches for his movie roles. He said, “I have covered it up for my movies because it just distracts, and I don’t want my audience to look at anything else except for what I want to show them, so that is the reason I hide it. But for all my public appearances, for all these years, I have never bothered to cover it up.”

Dealing with vitiligo flare-ups can be challenging, but a comprehensive approach can help manage the condition effectively. According to Dr Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist & Dermato-Surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics, Mumbai, it is essential to adopt both physical and mental strategies to cope with the symptoms.

How to deal with vitiligo flare-ups

Vitiligo flare-ups often occur unexpectedly, so it is crucial to remain mindful and reduce stress, which is known to aggravate the condition. Stress-reducing techniques such as meditation, yoga, and mindfulness can help manage emotional responses to sudden skin changes. Additionally, making peace with oneself and embracing self-acceptance are critical for mental well-being, Dr Kapoor said.

Incorporating the right nutrition can play a vital role in controlling flare-ups. A diet rich in antioxidants—like berries, nuts, and leafy greens—can help reduce skin inflammation. Furthermore, she said that adding vitamins B12 and D3 supports the skin’s healing process and maintains its optimal function. Keeping a diary of flare-ups can also help identify triggers and manage them better.

It’s equally important to avoid harsh chemicals on the skin and use only doctor-recommended products. Be cautious of skin injuries such as cuts, scrapes, and burns, as these can cause new patches to develop. Treatment options like medications, creams, phototherapy, or skin grafts should only be pursued under expert guidance.

Lastly, avoid tattoos, Dr Kapoor noted, as they can worsen vitiligo symptoms. Joining support groups can provide emotional support and practical advice from others with the condition.
