Sonam Kapoor’s Mumbai home is more than just a luxurious residence; it’s a captivating blend of Indian designs and maximalism, serving as a personal homage to the country’s rich heritage. The Saawariya star recently offered a glimpse into her opulent home, revealing a space that beautifully reflects her evolving style and deep-rooted connection to her country.

“This house represents a new chapter for me, as a woman, a collector—and a mother,” Kapoor tells Architectural Digest, while giving the team a tour of the new place, which she shares with her husband, entrepreneur Anand Ahuja, and their toddler son, Vayu.

Her kitchen was just an extension of the art that was housed in the rest of this house. The kitchen is home to over 3000 tiles, which have been painted in the Delft style by artist Shibani Dhavalikar. The ceramic artist from Pune shared on her Instagram stories that it took 3 months and six people to complete the project.

Sonam tells the outlet that she uses the kitchen a lot as she “loves cooking and baking” and so it was important for her that this be a beautiful space.

“This room is inspired by Delft tiles. I had this artist called Shibani. I told her to put Indian flora and fauna and birds, and kind of design my whole kitchen in a blue and white,” the actor says in the video of her house tour.

“There’s so much to share about this special project — from the design to the process to the learnings and the madness! From phones tied to the ceiling fan to the photography team shooting every little detail, we’ve tried to document the whole journey and I can’t wait to tell you all about it,” Shibani wrote on one of her Instagram stories.

The Delft genre of painting is what inspired Sonam to have the artist paint the kitchen tiles with Indian flora and fauna.

For those who don’t know, the Delft School, a prominent artistic movement of the Dutch Golden Age, emerged from the city of Delft in in the mid-17th century. Renowned for its genre paintings, the school captured the essence of everyday life through depictions of homes, church interiors, city squares, and bustling streets.

“I am the fourth generation of women in love with the crafts of India, and this home is as much a celebration of them as our personal space, and,” Sonam said of her home, “beyond them, beyond me, all those artisans who have worked on every single thread, tile, or brushstroke that makes this space so very beautiful—it is also a love song to them.”
