Resuming gym after a “long break” can feel overwhelming. So it is not surprising that Soha Ali Khan also felt the jitters. Opening up about the same, the 45-year-old wrote on Instagram: “Few things are tougher than that first session at the gym after a loooooong break!”, as she aced a combination of bodyweight and weight training exercises.

It’s not just us, even netizens were left impressed by her commitment with one writing, “U r just on par to man ur level of fitness always amazes me” (sic), while another shared, “💯 in fact, getting to that gym after that break is the toughest!🙈🙈🙈 you are 💪🏻”

If you too are planning to overcome laziness and hit the gym this week, here’s a helpful guide.

Dr Haricharan G, senior consultant physician, HoD, internal medicine, Gleneagles Hospitals, Lakdi Ka Pul, Hyderabad said that returning to the gym after a long break requires a gradual approach to avoid injury and ensure sustainable progress. “Start with a warm-up to increase blood flow to your muscles and prepare your body for exercise,” said Dr Haricharan.

Begin with low-impact activities, focusing on lighter weights and lower intensity. “This helps your muscles and joints reacclimated to physical activity and reduces the risk of strains or injuries,” said Dr Haricharan.

Incorporate dynamic stretching to improve flexibility and range of motion. Pay attention to your body’s signals, and avoid pushing too hard initially. “Focus on compound exercises that target multiple muscle groups to rebuild overall strength and endurance,” shared Dr Haricharan.

Hydration and proper nutrition are also crucial. Dr Haricharan recommends fueling your body with a balanced diet rich in proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats to support muscle recovery and energy levels.

“Rest is equally important; ensure adequate sleep and recovery days to allow your body to heal and adapt. Gradually increasing intensity and duration will help you regain strength and fitness while minimising the risk of injury,” said Dr Haricharan.
