Rotis are a staple in Indian diets. Whether you pair it with curries or sabzis, or use it as a desi alternative to tortillas, these flatbreads are one of the most sought after lunch and dinner carbohydrates the country’s population reaches out for. But what if we were to tell you that there is an option to make your otherwise atta flour roti even more healthy than it generally is?

Apparently a combination of sattu and jowar in rotis is a go-to lunch option for Masaba Gupta, as per her Instagram stories. The Indian designer, who is expecting her first child, shared a picture of her plate with this particular roti, methi chicken, baingan bharta and boondi raita.

Indianexpress.com spoke to Vedika Premani, clinical dietician, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai, to understand whether this combination can truly promise a whole bunch of health benefits with barely any of the downsides.

“Yes, a combination of sattu and jowar roti is a healthier option than only a whole wheat roti. Sattu, which is made out of chana when combined with jowar, a millet, makes a cereal/millet-pulse combination which has a different profile of all essential amino acids. Hence, making the roti a good source of protein,” said Premani.

What are the health benefits of sattu and jowar?

According to Premani, sattu is a product of channa dal, which makes it a good protein source for the Indian diet. It is rich in dietary fibre and minerals like magnesium, iron and calcium. Hence, it helps to regulate blood sugar levels, improve muscular strength, improves immunity and supports bone strength as well.

Jowar, a gluten-free millet, is also rich in dietary fibre, and is known to help regulate blood sugar levels as well. It is rich in minerals like potassium and phosphorus, improves heart health, strengthens immunity and helps to relieve constipation,” she added.

Can there be any health risks associated with this combination?

“No, if combined with other sources of dietary fibre like vegetables and other dals, this combination should not give any constipation,” said Premani. She considered this combination to be a wonderful addition and a beneficial part of regular diet.
