Dietician recommends starting your morning with this healthy drink

Social media is a wonderful source of infotainment. And sometimes, the nuggets of wisdom that we collect can indeed help turn our lives around. According to digital creator, this concoction of fenugreek and fennel seeds added in warm water and turmeric and cinnamon added to the mix can apparently improve immunity and gut health. For those on the hunt for a power drink, look no further!

Indianexpress.com spoke to Kanikka Malhotra, Consultant Dietician and Diabetes Educator, and found out the health benefits and the ideal frequency of taking this drink in your regular diet.

What are the health benefits of these ingredients?

“Methi or fenugreek seeds are rich in fibre, which promotes regularity and feeds good gut bacteria. It might also soothe inflammation in the digestive tract,” shared Malhotra.

“Fennel seeds, which are popularly known as saunf have carminative/anti spasmodic properties, which help relieve bloating and gas. It may also relax the digestive muscles, aiding digestion,” she added.

According to her, cinnamon possesses anti-inflammatory and anti microbial properties that can benefit gut health. Studies suggest it might help regulate gut microbiota composition.

She said that it can also help regulate blood sugar levels, which indirectly supports gut health by maintaining overall metabolic balance.

According to Malhotra, haldi or turmeric is an anti-inflammatory spice.

“Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, may improve gut health by reducing inflammation and promoting a healthy gut microbiome. It has been shown to enhance gut barrier function, potentially preventing leaky gut syndrome,” she said.

She shared that this drink promises to improve digestion and reduce bloating, gas, and inflammation. It balances gut flora by supporting good bacteria and reducing inflammation, contributing to a healthier gut microbiome, she added.

Here’s how to incorporate this drink into your routine?

Malhotra recommended taking this drink in the morning on an empty stomach or after meals to aid digestion. According to her, 1-2 times a day is generally safe for most people.

Some precautions to keep in mind

“Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before consuming this drink due to the potential effects of fenugreek on uterine contractions. People on blood thinners should also beware since cinnamon might interact with blood-thinning medications.” She suggested discussing with your doctor before including it in your diet.

Even though this drink is a complementary approach to gut health, she shared that it’s important to maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein for optimal gut health. “If you have persistent gut issues, consult a doctor to identify the root cause and get personalized recommendations,” added Malhotra.
