This drink promises to cleanse your colon — does it deliver on the hype?

Colon cleansing is a common medical fad circulating the internet, with many digital creators sharing homemade drinks that claim to detoxify your gut. One such concoction of pineapple, cucumber, ginger, lemon, and water caught our attention.

Indianexpress.com consulted functional nutritionist Preety Tyagi to understand whether natural ingredients can effectively cleanse the colon.

“The process of cleansing the colon is very effective for overall health and maintaining a healthy gut. It also helps in weight loss and detoxification,” shared Preety Tyagi, lead health coach and nutritionist, and founder of MY22BMI.

According to her, the above concoction can truly help cleanse the colon, increase energy levels, and promote weight loss when combined with healthy exercise and a fit lifestyle.

However, this drink is not suitable for those allergic to pineapples or any of the other ingredients.

How does this drink help cleanse your colon?

All the ingredients mentioned above are high in antioxidants, which makes it ideal to lose weight and look young, said Tyagi.

“Pineapples are high in vitamin C and fibre, which helps you not only cleanse your system but also helps in getting better skin and youthful looks. Ginger is a great anti-inflammatory food that helps you keep the inflammation under control and improves your immunity to make you feel and look great,” Tyagi said.

“Lemon juice is an excellent source of Vitamin C, is a great cleanse food and is also a diuretic, which helps in removing excess water from your body and removes water retention. Cucumber is again a green vegetable high in water content and rich in fibre,” she said.

Is it really possible to cleanse the colon effectively?

It is indeed possible to cleanse your colon effectively, but it is not a one-day task. It’s important to maintain healthy bowel habits and ensure your body can cleanse itself daily. This can be achieved through a healthy and balanced diet.

A healthy lifestyle also includes regular exercise to burn extra calories. Avoiding sugar and sugary drinks can significantly contribute to this process, leading to higher energy levels and better overall health.

How often should this drink be taken in a regular diet?

Tyagi advised that any detox drink incorporated into your diet should not be taken for longer than two weeks.

“This is to avoid making the body habitual to it and to prevent excess consumption. However, the same drink can be included in your diet again after a period of time, say two weeks,” she added.

She said that a colon cleanse is most effective in the first few days of starting a new drink and may take a while to achieve noticeable results.

“These drinks can also come with health risks. People with compromised gut health or acute gastric issues should avoid this drink, so be cautious when trying it out,” Tyagi said.
