The fashion industry has long been criticised for neglecting plus-size individuals, perpetuating harmful stereotypes and limiting style options. However, a growing number of designers and brands are challenging these misconceptions and embracing body diversity. Nidah Merchant, a fashion expert and founder of Nemah, sheds light on some prevalent myths surrounding plus-size fashion.

Oversized clothes and body image

One common misconception is that oversized clothing will make plus-size individuals appear larger. According to Merchant, this is not necessarily true. “Social media has made oversized clothes cool again, she explained, emphasising that the key lies in selecting the right fit and style for one’s body shape. It’s all about shopping for what suits your body and not what the trends say should suit you.”

The myth of sleeveless apparel

Another misconception is that sleeveless tops accentuate arm size. Merchant dismissed this claim, stating that clothing cannot alter the appearance of body parts. “While certain styles like v-necks and scoop necks can draw attention away from the arms, she believes individuals should feel comfortable and confident in their choices. Merchant asserted that Clothes cannot change how or what a particular body part looks like.”

Short skirts and dresses for plus-size women

The notion that short skirts and dresses are unsuitable for plus-size women is also addressed by Merchant. She emphasised comfort and confidence as the primary factors in choosing attire. She said that it’s all about wearing clothes that bring you comfort, adding that personal style should not be dictated by societal norms.

The vertical stripe illusion

The belief that vertical stripes are exclusively flattering for plus-size individuals was challenged by Merchant. While vertical stripes can create a lengthening effect, she highlighted the importance of individual preference and body confidence. “We are always looking for ways to improve…but it really comes down to if you feel beautiful when you look at yourselves in the mirror,” she explained.

Swimwear and body acceptance

Merchant also addressed the misconception that swimsuits or bikinis are inappropriate for plus-size women. She argued that swimwear should primarily serve a functional purpose, protecting the wearer from the sun and water. However, she acknowledged the societal pressures associated with body image and emphasised the importance of self-acceptance. Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder and that be only you.

In addition to these common myths, Merchant highlighted the issue of inconsistent sizing in the plus-size fashion industry. The lack of standardised sizing can be frustrating for consumers. Merchant has attempted to address this problem by using numerical sizing instead of traditional labels.

Common styling mistakes and solutions

Merchant warned against blindly following fashion trends without considering personal body shape and style. She emphasised the importance of knowing one’s body type and choosing clothing that flatters it. Additionally, she advised against relying solely on size labels and suggests using measurements for a better fit.

The need for inclusivity

While there has been progress in the plus-size fashion industry, Merchant pointed out that some brands still charge higher prices for larger sizes and offer limited options in categories like swimwear and sportswear. She stressed the importance of “inclusivity and providing a wide range of choices for plus-size individuals.”

As the demand for plus-size fashion continues to grow, brands and designers need to prioritise diversity and create a more inclusive environment for all consumers.
