Who doesn’t love a good weekend binge? Curling up on your couch with a bowl of hot buttered popcorn and a fizzy drink to melt away the worries of the week ahead – sounds like a dream. Khushi Kapoor, seen in a recent reel for Bumble’s Opening Moves campaign, shared that she can easily pull off a seven to eight-hour binge-watch marathon, with her pet dogs.

To find out the potential health impacts of these marathons, indianexpress.com consulted Dr Suchismitha Rajamanya, lead consultant & HOD – internal medicine at Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru.

“While weekends are for unwinding and detoxing from work, extended binge sessions and movie marathons can disrupt your body’s natural cycle. It’s crucial to maintain discipline and stick close to your weekday routine, as otherwise, Mondays may leave you feeling tired despite ‘resting’ all weekend,” Rajamanya cautioned.

According to her, many people try to compensate for a lack of an active social life by binge-watching shows, seeking connection with the characters on screen and living vicariously through their reel lives.

What happens when you binge watch for hours?

Rajamanya said that people often snack on unhealthy, junk foods while consuming content, leading to increased calorie intake and potential weight gain. Alcohol and fizzy drinks exacerbate these issues. Being lethargic can also diminish the processing capacity of the brain, she said.

“Not to mention the bad posture that comes with it. People are either laying down for hours or hunched over handheld devices, with eyes glued to screens. This can cause unnecessary eye strain and dryness,” said Rajamanya.

According to her, it’s unfortunate that young children are recording pre-diabetes and fatty liver at much early stages due to this altered lifestyle, making them susceptible to more diseases later in life.

To mitigate these risks, she advised taking breaks every 30 minutes to stretch. “Get up, go for a short walk, maybe read a book or go shopping. Keep yourself active and moving,” she said.
