Do genes dictate acne, body weight? Experts weigh in

Many of us struggle with acne breakouts or weight management, and it’s easy to point a finger at our genes. Then again the reality is more nuanced. Genes certainly play a part in both, but that’s not the whole story. It turns out there’s a connection between your genes, your skin, and your weight. Let’s explore the intriguing relationship between genes, acne, and weight, and uncover how you can take charge of your health irrespective of your genetic background.

Dr Marwil Luis, a clinical aesthetician, explains that genetics do notably impact acne development. However, it’s not as simple as an on/off switch. Our genes affect how our immune system fights germs that cause acne and controls the production of oil. Dr Luis states that acne expression often peaks during the teen and adult years (around ages 12 to 24). This suggests a hormonal link that our genes may influence.

Meanwhile, Dr Shareefa Isa Chause, a dermatologist, explains why some people gain weight more easily. She says there isn’t one gene that makes you overweight, however, some genes can be like amplifiers.” If you have these genes and you don’t eat healthy or exercise, they can get turned on, leading to obesity and inflammation. This inflammation can also worsen acne. This inflammation can also worsen acne. She highlights PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) as another factor that can interact with genes and hormones to aggravate both acne and weight issues.

The Power of Prevention

You can significantly impact how your genes are expressed. There are some simple tips you can take to fight acne and manage weight:

  1. Neglect fancy diets and processed junk. Eat fruits, veggies, spare meats, and whole grains rather. This simple alteration gives our bodies the necessary nutrients they need for clear skin and healthy weight.
  2. Regular physical exercise is important for hormone regulation, metabolism boost, weight control, and potentially reducing acne outbreak- ups.
  3. Hormonal imbalances can affect your skin and weight. However, consult your physician, if you suspect a problem. Addressing hormonal issues can result in clearer skin and better weight operation.
  4. Dr Luis suggests using a gentle skincare routine with a cleanser containing salicylic acid and a moisturiser with a water base. For active acne, a doctor may suggest an antibiotic cream like clindamycin. Dr Luis also recommends testing for the following conditions in individuals concerned about weight gain.
  • Hypothyroidism: A condition affecting the thyroid gland, which regulates metabolism. An inactive thyroid can contribute to weight gain.
  • Growth hormone deficiency: Growth hormone plays a role in regulating metabolism and body composition, its deficiency can make it difficult to lose weight.

These tests are often made early on in childhood but can be done at any age. These tests mustn’t actually test for obesity-related genes; rather, they bring to light possible underlying disorders. However, ruling out these conditions can help doctors create a more personalised weight management plan.

Genetics play a role, but healthy habits like exercise and good food can make a big difference, even if your family has a history of these issues, you can control your weight and acne by exercising, eating right, and seeing a doctor when necessary.
