Mira and Shahid Kapoor are one of Bollywood’s favourite couples, and their love for vacationing is reiterated time and again through travel pictures on their Instagram. Traveling can strengthen relationships and bonds between people. But, beyond the tinsel town, married couples worldwide often find themselves burdened with responsibilities, making trips seem like a low priority.

Indianexpress.com spoke with Srishti Vatsa, a counseling psychologist, and learned why vacationing together can make or break your relationship, and how often couples should travel together.

“Traveling together as a couple can help sustain the spark and break the monotony of daily routines. When you take a trip together, you share experiences, whether positive or negative,” said Vatsa.

Trips can also test your relationship, according to Vatsa. “It’s not always rosy and smooth; you may face challenges on your travels. Overcoming them together can help you strengthen your bond and build a stronger foundation as a team,” she said.

What if you have kids?

“If you are a married couple with children, taking a break from regular responsibilities can help breathe life into you, especially for mothers, in the Indian context,” Vatsa said.

According to her, it is important for partners to realise that caregivers need breathing space and breaks during the trip. Effective communication and support can ensure the caregiver doesn’t feel overwhelmed or begin to resent vacationing while their partner relaxes and unwinds.

She emphasises the importance of understanding and giving each other space, even while on vacation. “Partners may have opposite interests—one might prefer hiking while the other enjoys relaxing by the resort pool. Let the other indulge in things of their liking and draw a healthy compromise when it comes to spending time together.”

How often should you plan a trip?

According to Vatsa, the frequency of trips depends on several factors such as the age of children, the presence of elderly parents or in-laws, and the family’s financial situation. “For many middle-class families, managing single or double incomes and balancing other responsibilities dictates their ability to afford and take time off for vacations. It’s important not to be swayed by social media portrayals and plan trips that align with your own circumstances,” she said.

Vatsa also said that there’s no strict rule on how often couples should travel together. Instead, they should customise their travel plans to suit their needs and preferences. “Even a simple picnic in the garden can provide a refreshing break from everyday routines and obligations. The main focus should be on spending as much quality time as possible with each other.”
