Haircare and technology just got hitched! The result? LED combs that claim to stimulate hair growth.  Now you can sit back and tune into your favourite televison series, comb away your problems and dream about Rapunzel’s mane all at the comfort of your own home!

Dr Natasha Vijayendran, Dermatologist & Hair Transplant Surgeon at Violett Aesthetics, helps us decode this latest innovation buzzing all over our social media feeds.

How do LED combs work?

“LED basically means light emitted dialogue. These combs are US FDA approved devices for both male and female pattern hair loss or balding, known as androgenic alopecia or geometric hair thinning. Scientifically LED combs are known as known as LLT, or low level laser technology or low level laser light that’s being used to encourage hair regrowth,” said Dr Vijayendran.

These combs emit light of a particular wavelength that stimulate hair follicles and help in regeneration and repair of all these damage tissues in our system. The light activates the blood supply to that area and dilates blood vessels, leading to more blood flow to the hair follicle, added the dermatologist.

She explained, that we have a growth phase, a resting phase and a shedding phase.”The LLT comb promotes our hair to remain a longer period in the growth phase and reduces the time it is in the resting and the shedding phase.”

How often can you use them?

“They can be used anywhere from four to seven times in a week. Earlier, they were available for only dermatologist clinic use, but now with advanced technology, they’re available for at home use as well.”

Meant to be used like a normal comb, Vijayendran recommends washing your hair as you usually do and then drying it with the LED comb. Plug it in and run it through your hair from the scalp to the tip of your hair for about 15 to 20 minutes for optimal results.

What about results?

“People usually see visible results in about three months with consistent daily usage. Any type of hair loss or any type of genetic hair thinning that we see, there are multiple factors that are affecting the rate of thinning. Your diet and lifestyle, how strong your genes are as well as stress levels, everything plays a role,” said Vijayendran.

According to her, using just the LED comb won’t do any good. She advises taking your hair supplements along with your hair serum as prescribed by a dermatologist.

“But as an at-home adjuvant, it works well and it does give promising results as well,” she stated.

Any side effects?

Side effects with these laser combs are very, very mild. Some of the most common side effects we usually see include a scalp that’s a little dry and sensitive, Vijayendran said.

These issues tend to resolve themselves after using the comb for two to three weeks because your skin gets used to it. But if it lasts for more than that, she recommended getting in touch with your dermatologist.

As a pro tip she suggests using a reputed brand that’s well researched to ensure that all the LED bulbs are working well and minimize any side effects with it.
