Georgia judge dismisses two charges against Trump in election interference case

A Georgia judge on Thursday dismissed two criminal charges in the 2020 election interference case against Donald Trump.

Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee ruled that state prosecutors did not have the authority to file those charges, which were related to the alleged submission of false documents in federal court. One additional charge was also dropped against Trump’s allies.

Despite this, eight charges against Trump remain in the case, including allegations of racketeering. Trump and 14 co-defendants, who have all pleaded not guilty, are accused of trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia.

The case has been paused since June while a Georgia appeals court reviews claims of misconduct by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, tied to a past romantic relationship. Arguments in this appeal are set for December, pushing the trial beyond the upcoming presidential election.

Trump also faces a federal case for efforts to overturn the national election results, which has been slowed by a US Supreme Court ruling granting former presidents broad immunity from prosecution.

This decision marks the dismissal of five out of the original 13 charges Trump faced in Georgia. In March, McAfee had already dismissed six other charges. Trump’s legal team celebrated Thursday’s ruling, with lawyer Steve Sadow stating that it was another victory for their client.

However, the key charge of racketeering, which applies to all defendants, was upheld by the judge.
