US President Joe Biden will host the leaders of Australia, India, and Japan next weekend in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, the White House announced. The Quad summit comes as Biden aims to solidify his legacy ahead of leaving office in January.

Biden, the first US president to host a summit of the Quad leaders in 2021, has overseen annual meetings as part of the US’s strategic shift toward the Indo-Pacific to counter China’s influence.

This will be the first time Biden will host foreign leaders in Delaware during his presidency, as he has been spending more time in his home state since ending his reelection campaign in July.

Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre informed about Biden’s decision to host Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Wilmington, and called it “a sign of his close personal ties with the Quad leaders” and the significance of the group to all four nations.

“The Quad Leaders Summit will focus on strengthening strategic cooperation, promoting a shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific, and delivering tangible benefits for partners in the region,” Jean-Pierre said.

This summit will be Biden and Kishida’s final Quad meeting, as neither leader will be running in their respective upcoming elections.

The change in hosting duties follows scheduling conflicts for India, which had initially planned to host the Quad Summit in January in Delhi around Republic Day.

Due to clashes with the US President’s schedule and upcoming elections in India, the event got postponed. India will now host the Quad Summit in 2025, with the next US President—either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump—expected to visit India.
