In the ever-expanding realm of skincare, natural remedies are taking center stage. One such remedy that has garnered attention is the tomato and honey mask, being touted as a skin saviour by many celebrities, including Roshni Chopra. “Let’s try the viral tomato and honey mask to brighten and tighten my dull skin,” the video played while Chopra demonstrated applying it on her face. “Cut a tomato in half and mix in a few drops of honey, then gently rub on the face for a few minutes and leave to dry for 10-15 minutes. Rinse off and apply moisturiser,” she shared its recipe.

But does this natural concoction truly live up to the hype, or is it merely another fad? We reached out to an expert to understand the science behind these ingredients and their potential benefits.

According to Dr Monica Bambroo, head of dermatology & cosmetology at Artemis Hospital, Gurgaon, there are several skin benefits to applying a tomato and honey mask.

Tomatoes are a great source of lycopene, which is a very strong antioxidant. It provides protection against harmful UV rays. Rich in vitamin C and E, tomatoes also help in brightening the skin and improving its texture,” she told indianexpress.com.

On the other hand, Dr Bambroo noted that honey is a natural antibacterial that keeps the skin moisturised, making it ideal for dry and acne-prone skin.

“Using honey and tomato together can help in reducing inflammation, moisturising and hydrating the skin, treating acne, and giving an even skin tone,” she added.

Despite these benefits, Dr Bambroo said that there are certain concerns associated with its use. “Tomatoes have acids and when applied to the skin might cause irritation, redness, and a stinging sensation, especially if used too often or left on for too long. Meanwhile, honey has a sticky texture, and the lack of its proper removal can cause clogged pores and acne breakouts in some people.”

Additionally, people who are allergic to honey or tomatoes must avoid using it. “Those who have sensitive skin or are prone to acne breakouts must skip using it altogether. People with certain skin conditions must also refrain from applying this mask as its application can lead to irritation, redness, and other issues,” Dr Bambroo cautioned.

She advises doing a patch test before applying it everywhere and consulting a dermatologist if needed. “In case there are any adverse reactions noticed, then the use of this mask must be immediately discontinued, and a dermatologist must be consulted promptly to avoid any further complications.”
