Cultivating the right habits is all about practice. Malaika Arora too, believes in the same as she recently reflected on how yoga is a way of life for her. Sharing glimpses from her yoga class, Malaika wrote on Instagram, “Yoga is not just a workout …. It’s a way of life for me.”

She can be seen doing surya mamaskar. Surya namaskar, also known as Sun salutation, is a sequence of yoga poses performed in a flowing manner. It is a fundamental and dynamic practice that combines several asanas (yoga poses) and pranayama (breathing exercises). “Surya namaskar is not just a physical exercise; it encompasses spiritual, mental, and physical aspects, aligning the body and mind,” said fitness expert Garima Goyal.

Why should we practice yoga?

Integrating yoga into your life can offer a myriad of physical, mental, and emotional benefits, making it a valuable and holistic practice. From enhancing flexibility to promoting mental well-being, here’s why yoga is often considered a must for overall health and balance.

Goyal shared that regular practice helps lengthen and stretch muscles, increasing overall range of motion. “This increased flexibility can alleviate stiffness and reduce the risk of injuries in daily activities or other forms of exercise,” said Goyal.

While yoga is often associated with flexibility, it also builds strength. “Many yoga poses require holding the body in specific positions, which engages various muscle groups. This gentle yet effective strength training contributes to improved overall muscle tone and endurance,” Goyal said.

The controlled movements and gentle stretches in yoga support joint health, Goyal added. “By lubricating the joints and improving their range of motion, yoga can contribute to alleviating discomfort associated with conditions like arthritis,” Goyal said.

Perhaps one of the most well-known benefits of yoga is its ability to reduce stress. “The combination of mindful breathing and focused movement helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing stress hormone levels,” Goyal expressed.

The emphasis on breath awareness and the mind-body connection fosters a state of mindfulness, helping individuals cultivate a focused and calm mind. “The mind-body connection in yoga extends to emotional well-being. Through self-reflection and conscious awareness, yoga provides a space for individuals to explore and manage their emotions, fostering emotional balance and resilience,” Goyal mentioned.

The adaptability of yoga, its accessibility, and the profound benefits it offers make it a compelling practice for those seeking a more balanced and fulfilling life.
