According to Dr Parth Nagda, consultant psychiatry at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Navi Mumbai, crocheting, like any other hobby, has benefits for mental and physical health such as:

Reduced stress and anxiety: Can serve as a source of distraction and help to take your mind off worries and anxieties and some studies show it can reduce chronic pain

Improved mood and well-being: Any creative activity where expressiveness is allowed can be a great mood booster and can help to improve your overall sense of well-being. Crocheting can help with this

Sharper mind: The need for keeping track of stitches requires concentration and mental effort, which can help to improve cognitive function.

Better fine motor skills: Good hand-eye coordination and dexterity with regular use

Sense of accomplishment: Sense of satisfaction that comes from finishing a crochet project giving a boost to your self-esteem.

Social connection: Crocheting can be a social activity. There are many online and in-person communities of crocheters who share tips, patterns, and encouragement. Crocheting with others can be a great way to relax, socialize, and make new friends.

How does it help calm your mind?

The repetitive motions of crocheting, like looping yarn and following a stitch pattern, have a meditative quality, said Dr Nagda. This repetition can lull your mind into a calmer state, similar to how focusing on your breath during meditation helps quiet racing thoughts.

“Crocheting requires just enough focus to keep your mind occupied without being overwhelming. This gentle focus allows you to be present in the moment and let go of worries or anxieties that might be swirling around in your head,” he added in an interaction with indianexpress.com.

Studies have shown that crocheting can lower cortisol levels, the stress hormone, Dr Nagda said. This physiological response translates to feeling calmer and more relaxed as you crochet.
