Can basil water with a dash of lemon and honey promote hair growth?

Adding to the countless ways to save your mane and promote hair growth, we’ve stumbled upon another DIY method that surfaced on social media. Hairfallsolutions.in mentions that consuming a spoonful of basil seed water with a squeeze of lemon and honey can help control hair fall and stimulate hair growth.

“All you have to do is to prepare the combination by putting sabja seeds in a glass of water, adding a dash of lemon and honey. Let it sit for 30 minutes. Then drink it every day,” the post read.

Is there any truth to this claim?

Here’s what we found out from our experts.

Basil seeds, also known as sabja seeds, have gained popularity for their potential health benefits, but their direct influence on hair growth is not well-established, said Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics. “Basil seeds are rich in nutrients like iron, magnesium, and vitamins, which contribute to overall health. However, specific claims about their impact on hair growth require a nuanced understanding.”

Lemon, on the other hand, is a citrus fruit rich in vitamin C, which plays a crucial role in collagen synthesis — a protein essential for hair structure. “Additionally, the acidic nature of lemon aids in maintaining a healthy scalp pH, creating a conducive environment for hair growth,” said Dr Kapoor.

She mentioned that while staying hydrated and incorporating nutrient-rich foods into your diet is crucial for healthy hair, it’s important to note that external factors, genetics, and overall health play significant roles in hair growth.

“The idea of soaking basil seeds and lemon in water might have potential health benefits, including improved digestion and skin health, but a direct and substantial impact on hair growth may be limited. A comprehensive approach to hair health involves a well-balanced diet, proper hydration, regular scalp care, and managing stress,” noted Dr Kapoor.

For those seeking to enhance hair growth, consulting a dermatologist is advisable. “Dermatologists can provide personalised advice based on individual health conditions and may recommend topical treatments, dietary adjustments, or other interventions tailored to specific needs,” Dr Kapoor concluded.

In conclusion, while basil seeds and lemon water can contribute to overall health, relying solely on them for significant hair growth benefits may not yield the desired results. A holistic approach to hair care, including a nutrient-rich diet and proper hair care practices, is key to supporting optimal hair health.
