This aromatic spice, derived from the bark of Cinnamomum trees, contains compounds that contribute to women’s well-being in various ways, experts urge. “Cinnamon holds promise in supporting fertility through various mechanisms. Notably, it may regulate menstrual cycles and enhance ovulatory function, fostering a conducive environment for conception. Its impact on insulin sensitivity and blood sugar regulation is crucial, ensuring stable metabolic conditions for reproductive health,” said nutritionist Juhi Kapoor.

Rich in antioxidants, Kapoor mentioned that cinnamon combats oxidative stress, protecting reproductive cells from damage. “Additionally, its anti-inflammatory properties contribute to a healthier reproductive environment,” said Kapoor, who added that the spice is believed to support uterine health and may aid in managing conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

Dt Inshara Mahedvi, consultant dietician, Motherhood Hospital, Lullanagar, Pune concurred and shared that cinnamon is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which can be particularly beneficial for women experiencing menstrual discomfort. “It may help alleviate menstrual cramps and reduce inflammation, providing natural relief during the menstrual cycle,” said Mahedvi.

Blood sugar regulation: Maintaining stable blood sugar levels is crucial for overall health, and cinnamon has been studied for its potential to improve insulin sensitivity. “This can be particularly relevant for women with conditions like PCOS, where insulin resistance is a common concern, said Mahedvi.

Fertility support: Certain antioxidants found in cinnamon may contribute to reproductive health. Some studies suggest that cinnamon may have a positive impact on ovarian function and can potentially support fertility. “While more research is needed, these findings are encouraging for women looking to enhance their reproductive well-being,” said Mahedvi.

Anti-microbial properties: According to Mahedvi, cinnamon possesses natural anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties. This can be beneficial for women in preventing and managing common vaginal infections, maintaining a healthy microbial balance in the genital area.

Heart health: Cardiovascular health is essential for women, and cinnamon may contribute to it by helping to lower cholesterol levels, said Mahedvi. “Maintaining a healthy heart is crucial, especially considering the unique cardiovascular challenges that women may face throughout different life stages,” said Mahedvi.

Agreed Sushma PS, chief dietitian, Jindal Naturecure Institute and shared that by improving cholesterol levels, cinnamon may lower the risk of heart disease, and magnesium and calcium are crucial for heart health and strong bones, helping prevent conditions like osteoporosis.

Anti-inflammatory effects: Chronic inflammation is linked to various health issues, including conditions affecting women’s reproductive systems. “Cinnamon’s anti-inflammatory properties may assist in managing inflammation, potentially offering relief for conditions such as endometriosis,” said Mahedvi.

Weight management: Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for overall well-being, including reproductive health by regulating blood sugar levels and enhancing metabolism.

How to add cinnamon to your diet?

You can easily add cinnamon to your diet by infusing water with cinnamon sticks overnight or enjoying cinnamon tea. “It can also be sprinkled over desserts or added to rice dishes like pulao for a flavorful twist,” said Sushma.
