Feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or simply out of sync? In our fast-paced world, prioritising self-care is more important than ever. Enter sound baths, an immersive experience that utilises resonant sounds to induce relaxation, improve well-being, and leave you feeling rejuvenated.

But what exactly are sound baths, and how can these seemingly simple vibrations offer such profound benefits?

According to Dr Shaunak Ajinkya, consultant psychiatrist, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai, sound baths are a form of sound therapy where participants immerse themselves in sounds produced by various instruments, such as singing bowls, gongs, chimes, and tuning forks.

Where does the idea of a sound bath come from?

The practice of healing through sound is very ancient. The idea behind sound baths is rooted in the concept of vibrational healing, explained Dr Ajinkya.

“Proponents believe that exposure to specific frequencies and vibrations can help the energy balance of the body and mind. The immersive experience also deepens meditative practices,” he told indianexpress.com in an interaction.

Sound baths are generally considered safe, but individuals with misophonia or increased sensitivity to sound should consult a healthcare professional before participating, Ajinkya warned.

How are sound baths helpful for your mental health?

Yes, sound baths are beneficial for mental health in many ways, according to Dr Ajinkya:

1. Some of the sound vibrations and frequencies of the instruments during a sound bath helps to release pent-up emotions. They facilitate emotional release by creating a safe space for individuals to explore and process their emotions. Other soothing sounds and vibrations help to induce a state of deep relaxation lowering stress levels. They also improve sleep quality.

2. Sound baths also provide an opportunity for participants to engage in mindfulness-based practices, as they focus their attention on the sounds and sensations in the present moment. The immersive experience shifts ones focus away from negative thoughts and emotions quietening the mind promoting feelings of calmness and well-being.

3. The calming sounds induce a deep state of relaxation, helping to alleviate pain and discomfort by reducing stress and muscle tension, and promoting a sense of tranquillity.

What happens in a sound bath experience?

During a sound bath session, participants typically lie down comfortably while the practitioner plays these instruments, creating a soothing and meditative atmosphere.

The person should not hook into the melody, because you don’t want the brain to recognise a repeated beat, explained Dr Ajinkya. Instead, they want the participants to release their pent-up feelings and to let go, facilitating emotional release.

The session generally lasts anywhere between 15 minutes to an hour. After a sound bath, participants are advised to move slowly when sitting up, stay hydrated, and relaxed.

It’s essential to remember that individual experiences may vary, and sound baths should not be seen as a substitute for professional mental health advice and treatment.
