Sushma PS, chief dietitian, Jindal Naturecure Institute said that alkaline foods serve as a preventive measure against acid accumulation within the body, supporting gentle detoxification processes. “The consumption of an alkaline salad promotes gastrointestinal health by incorporating ingredients characterised by low acidity levels and rich fibre, vitamin, and mineral content, which are essential for digestive well-being,” said Sushma.

Such ingredients typically include leafy greens, fermented foods, lemon, coconut, pomegranate, avocado, and a choice of dressing. Sushma said that these components are abundant in fibre and essential nutrients, facilitating digestion and supplying vital vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants conducive to gut health. “Moreover, the nutrients present in these foods aid in mitigating gut inflammation, commonly associated with conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Furthermore, the intake of alkaline foods contributes to the enhancement of the immune system, a reduced likelihood of developing chronic diseases and inflammatory ailments, balanced hormone levels, decreased body fat and weight coupled with enhanced muscle mass, heightened energy levels, diminished cancer risk, and improved cognitive function, perception, and mood,” said Sushma.

However, it is crucial to emphasise the necessity of maintaining balance and moderation when incorporating alkaline foods into one’s diet. It is also imperative to uphold a diverse and well-balanced dietary regimen encompassing a variety of nutrient-dense foods. “Additionally, individual dietary requirements and sensitivities vary, underscoring the importance of consulting with a healthcare professional before implementing significant dietary modifications,” said Sushma.
