Rashmika Mandanna has always been candid about her fitness journey and continues to share snippets from it. One such glimpse was a shot of the Animal actor stretching in the gym. “Don’t forget to stretch! It’s good for your body and you’ll definitely be doing your older self a favour. So, don’t forget to stretch, okay!” Rashmika captioned her Instagram story.

Why stretching is important for you as you age?

“Stretching is a multifaceted practice that offers a wide range of benefits, from physical flexibility to mental relaxation. Integrating diverse stretching techniques into your routine can have a profound impact on your overall health and lifestyle,” shared fitness expert Garima Goyal.

Ageing is often associated with a natural decline in flexibility. “Regular stretching can counteract this decline, promoting better mobility and independence in daily activities,” said Goyal.

*Stretching involves lengthening muscles and tendons, allowing for an increased range of motion. This enhanced flexibility is crucial in daily activities, sports, and preventing injuries.

*Poor posture can lead to musculoskeletal problems. Stretching the muscles around the spine, shoulders, and hips helps maintain proper alignment, reducing the risk of posture-related issues.

*Tight muscles are more susceptible to strains and injuries. “Stretching promotes muscle elasticity, allowing them to absorb sudden forces and movements without causing harm,” said Goyal.

*Stretching helps release accumulated tension in muscles, promoting relaxation. This is particularly beneficial for individuals with sedentary lifestyles or those experiencing stress-related muscle tightness.

*As you stretch, blood flow to the muscles increases, delivering more oxygen and nutrients. Improved circulation contributes to better overall cardiovascular health, mentioned Goyal.

*Stretching stimulates the nervous system and releases endorphins, resulting in increased energy levels and heightened alertness.

*Stretching triggers the relaxation response in the body, reducing cortisol levels and alleviating stress. Incorporating stretching into a routine can be a valuable tool for managing daily stressors.

*Targeted stretching can alleviate tension in the muscles supporting the spine, providing relief from both chronic and acute back pain.

*Establishing a stretching routine creates a sense of discipline and accomplishment. “The act of taking time for self-care through stretching can positively impact mental well-being and overall quality of life,” said Goyal.
