Maintaining lustrous and bouncy hair often involves a blend of natural care and nourishment. As such, when we came across a DIY hair oil made with commonly found kitchen ingredients like mustard oil, curry leaves, and fenugreek or methi seeds, we decided to deep dive and learn more. According to nutritionist Leema Mahajan, hair oil is a “holy grail for hair growth”.

“Studies have shown that rosemary oil has the same benefit as minoxidil and can show results in 3 to 6 months with continuous usage. Fenugreek seeds are known to stimulate hair growth by nourishing the hair follicles and increasing blood circulation to the scalp. The proteins present in fenugreek seeds strengthen the hair shaft, reducing hair fall and promoting the growth of new, healthy strands. The protein and beta-carotene present in curry leaves help strengthen your hair shaft from the roots,” said Mahajan.

How to make the oil?

Ingredients

Mustard oil
Curry leaves
Rosemary leaves
Fenugreek seeds
Almond oil
Castor oil

*In a pan, heat mustard oil.
*Add rosemary, curry leaves, and fenugreek seeds. Once the colour changes, switch off the flame.

*Transfer to a glass bottle.
*Add almond, and castor oil in equal parts.

Does it work?

Among the myriad of hair care options available, mustard oil stands out for its rich content of alpha fatty acids. “These acids play a crucial role in locking moisture into the hair, providing a natural conditioning effect that spans from the roots to the tips. The linolenic to the oleic acid ratio in mustard oil further contributes to its efficacy in promoting hydrated and healthy hair,” said Dr Saurabh Shah, dermatologist, cosmetologist, dermatosurgeon and hair transplant surgeon, Bhatia Hospital Mumbai.

Fenugreek is another powerhouse in the realm of natural hair care. “Fenugreek seeds boast a high protein content and are rich in vitamin B3 (nicotinic acid), making them a formidable ally against hair fall and dandruff,” said Dr Shah.

According to Dr Shah, this natural remedy goes beyond addressing common hair issues, extending its benefits to treating dryness, controlling balding, reducing hair thinning, and even moderating the intensity and frequency of graying.

Almond oil, known for its emollient properties, is a lightweight and fast-absorbing oil that offers a treasure trove of benefits for hair health. “Packed with fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, and E, almond oil nourishes the hair, enhances its shine, and provides deep conditioning. The presence of essential minerals like magnesium and calcium, along with omega 6 and 9 fatty acids, contributes to the comprehensive care it offers to the strands,” said Dr Shah.

However, if you have specific hair conditions and concerns, it is suggested to consult an expert.
