According to Dr Archana Batra, nutritionist, and certified diabetes educator, Gurgaon, clove tea, crafted from the dried flower buds of the Syzygium aromaticum tree, is gaining recognition as a soothing and health-promoting drink.

Benefits of clove tea

Antioxidant powerhouse: Clove tea is rich in antioxidants, which play a crucial role in combating oxidative stress and protecting cells from damage. This can contribute to overall health and may reduce the risk of chronic diseases, said Dr Batra. The eugenol compound found in cloves exhibits anti-inflammatory properties. “Regular consumption of clove tea may assist in managing inflammation within the body, providing relief for conditions such as arthritis,” said Dr Batra.

Digestive aid: Cloves have traditionally been used to ease digestive issues. “Clove tea, with its carminative properties, can help alleviate bloating, gas, and indigestion, promoting a healthy digestive system,” said Dr Batra.

Oral health: Cloves are renowned for their natural analgesic and antibacterial properties. “Clove tea may contribute to oral health by combating bacteria and providing relief from toothaches or gum discomfort,” said Dr Batra.

Is clove tea suitable for all?

Clove tea is generally safe for most people when consumed in moderation. “It can be particularly beneficial for those seeking natural remedies for digestive issues, inflammation, or oral health concerns. However, individuals with known allergies to cloves should exercise caution and avoid consumption,” said Dr Batra.

What to keep in mind?

Moderation is key: While cloves offer numerous health benefits, excessive intake may lead to adverse effects. Enjoy clove tea in moderation to avoid potential complications.
Pregnancy and nursing: Pregnant and nursing women should consult with a healthcare professional before incorporating clove tea into their diet, as its safety in these situations is not well-established, said Dr Batra.
Blood sugar levels: Clove tea may influence blood sugar levels. “Individuals with diabetes or those taking medications to regulate blood sugar should monitor their levels closely and consult with a healthcare provider,” said Dr Batra.

Individual allergies: Anyone with known allergies to cloves or related plants should avoid clove tea.
