Consuming triphala on an empty stomach may increase your risk of experiencing stomach issues,” said Kanikka. It is important to consult a professional before consuming larger doses of it, especially if you are someone who faces concurrent stomach issues.

Side effects for pregnant women

Triphala is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women. It should be noted that using triphala during pregnancy may lead to lactation issues later on and, in some cases, could increase the risk of miscarriage. In fact, Kanikka highlights that “It’s important to consult with a healthcare provider before taking any supplements during pregnancy.”

How to safely consume it?

Before consuming Triphala, it’s important to consult with a registered dietitian nutritionist, pharmacist, or healthcare provider. Moreover, it should be noted that there is insufficient scientific information about the proper dosage of triphala, but some sources suggest that ideally, a person should consume 500 mg to 1 gram only.

Kanikka also notes that “Some ayurvedic supplements have been found to contain contaminants like lead, mercury, or arsenic in dangerous amounts.” Therefore, it’s also crucial to check the quality of the herbal supplement before consuming it!
