Skipping this step in your skincare routine may be causing acne; experts share tips to tackle it

The foundation of a healthy skincare routine includes a cleansing, toning, moisturising and tonnes of sun protection factor (SPF). If you have oily, acne-prone skin, there comes a legion of treatments and serums to support your compromised skin barrier. However, pesky breakouts are often difficult to pinpoint and according to digital creator Ridhi Baluja, applying sunscreen without a moisturiser underneath may be triggering them.

Indianexpress.com spoke to dermatologists and found out whether there is substance to this claim.

“There is no direct relation to acne caused by skipping moisturiser before applying sunscreen. Most new-age sunscreens come with moisturising ingredients,” said Dr Mikki Singh, founder and medical director of Bodycraft Clinic.

For those with oily skin, she recommended that using only hydrating sunscreen in the morning is sufficient. However, for those with dry, dehydrated skin, adding a layer of moisturiser before applying sunscreen is an important step.

“While skipping moisturiser doesn’t cause acne directly, it can contribute to a dry, irritated complexion. This can lead to overproduction of oil, potentially triggering breakouts,” said Dr (Major) Gurveen Waraich Garekar, Garekars M.D. Dermatology Clinic.

Why is it important to apply moisturiser underneath sunscreen?

For people with dehydrated skin, Singh advises against skipping moisturiser before sunscreen, as the skin needs hydration due to trans-epidermal water loss throughout the day.

“Moisturiser creates a smooth, hydrated base for sunscreen application, ensuring even and adequate coverage. It alleviates dry, flaky skin, enhancing sunscreen adherence and effectiveness,” said Garekar.

Considering that some sunscreen formulas, especially chemical ones, can dry and irritate the skin, she added that moisturiser provides a barrier that enhances comfort and minimises irritation.

What are some common mistakes people make?

According to Singh, over-moisturising and applying too many layers can trigger acne and cause blocked pores. “Check the ingredient list for any comedogenic ingredients that can block pores,” she said.

Garekar advised opting for oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturisers and sunscreens to avoid clogging pores. “Washing the face twice a day with a gentle cleanser to remove excess oil, dirt, and sweat can help prevent breakouts,” she said.

Since hands come in contact with germs and oil throughout the day, she also suggested resisting the urge to touch the face to reduce the transfer of bacteria that can worsen acne. For persistent acne problems, she recommended consulting a dermatologist for personalised advice and treatment options.
