Yes, you indeed read it right in the headline. Masaba Gupta, currently expecting her first child with actor Satyadeep Misra, recently enjoyed an ice lolly made with bhindi or okra water. “Satyadeep made me an ice lolly with…hold your breath…bhindi water, pineapple, lemon, mango, and date powder,” the fashion designer wrote on Instagram, adding that it was “healthy +  yummy”.

Intrigued by this unusual treat, we reached out to an expert to understand whether it is advisable for pregnant women.

Jinal Patel, dietitian, Zynova Shalby Hospital, Mumbai said it is quite common to easily get tempted by unique food cravings, especially during pregnancy. “People enjoy customising their ice lollies according to their preferences for better taste and texture. However, one should be extremely cautious when experimenting with food while pregnant,” stressed Patel.

Pregnant women are usually advised to avoid eating raw or uncooked ingredients or food products as it can lead to several health complications. “Adding raw bhindi or using bhindi water to make ice lolly can be harmful to health and lead to allergic reactions,” said Patel.

According to Patel, bhindi or okra particularly contains a substance called mucilage, which can cause digestive issues like gas, diarrhea, and constipation in some women.

Pregnant women are advised to consult their doctor before making major changes to their regular diet or trying DIY food hacks. These hacks may increase sensitivity or lead to severe chronic allergies,” said Patel.

Your doctor may suggest whether that food is suitable during pregnancy or not. “Remember that during pregnancy the primary is to keep yourself and the baby healthy and safe for smooth delivery. Ensure that you make safe food choices and avoid eating unfamiliar food without discussing with your doctor,” said Patel.
