Food preferences can reveal a lot about personal values and lifestyle choices, and sometimes they play a significant role in romantic relationships.

This was highlighted by actor Rakul Preet Singh who revealed that she once rejected a partner due to their preference for fried foods. In an interview with podcast host Ranveer Allahbadia, she said that she wasn’t in the space to enter into a relationship before she met her now-husband, Jacky Bhagnani. As a result of this, she rejected a guy who ordered fried food on their date.

She said, “I didn’t want a frivolous man, or someone who shows off. These are still big things, I didn’t even want anybody who would order fried food. I have rejected a person because he ordered fried gyozas.”

She explained, “People have their own food choices, but it got worse when he looked down upon the food I ordered. He was like, ‘What are you eating, what is healthy?’ And that’s where I was like, ‘Out’. If we can’t share a meal and a lifestyle, it’s pointless. I have seen friends fighting over Indian and Chinese food.”

At first it might seem surface-level but such seemingly minor differences can potentially impact relationship dynamics. We speak to an expert to confirm this.

How can differing food preferences and lifestyle choices impact romantic relationships?

Dr Sneha Sharma, psychiatrist and co-founder, Anvaya Healthcare, tells indianexpress.com, “If partners’ food and lifestyle preferences diverge significantly from the other’s, it can lead to various challenges. For example, if one person values a health-conscious diet and the other prefers indulgent, less healthy options, this difference might manifest in daily routines, social activities, and long-term health goals.”

These differences, she adds, can create friction over meal planning, social outings, and even impact shared financial resources if eating out or buying specialty foods becomes a frequent issue. If not managed well, such differences might lead to misunderstandings and resentment, affecting overall relationship satisfaction.

Can conflicts over food and lifestyle choices be a sign of deeper issues in a relationship?

Dr Sharma agrees that conflicts over food and lifestyle choices can indeed highlight deeper relational issues. “For example, if one partner’s dietary choices are a source of tension, it might reflect underlying issues like lack of respect for each other’s values, communication problems, or differing priorities.”

“Such conflicts can also be symptomatic of broader compatibility issues, like differing long-term goals or lifestyle aspirations. For instance, disagreements about how to approach health might indicate differing views on personal responsibility or long-term planning,” she mentions.

How can couples navigate and reconcile significant differences in their daily preferences?

“Couples can manage and reconcile significant differences by fostering open communication and mutual respect,” notes Dr Sharma. “Understanding each other’s reasons behind their choices can help build empathy and compromise. For example, setting aside designated times for each partner’s preferences or finding middle ground in dietary choices can be effective strategies.”

Establishing shared goals, she states, like finding a balance between health and indulgence, can also help align lifestyles. “Seeking professional counselling or relationship coaching might also assist in navigating these differences and improving overall compatibility.”
