Using cold bandages to treat a fever is a common remedy, applied in many households across the world. But we were left open-mouthed when we read about the ‘wet sock method’ to reduce fever in children and adults.

According to a content creator, making children wear cold, wet socks and then covering them with dry, wool socks can help bring down a fever. “Was amused on learning that cold socks stimulate blood circulation, boosting the immune system. As your body works to warm the cold socks, it promotes better blood flow and helps reduce fever naturally,” the post read.

According to the post,

1. Safe and natural fever reduction
2. Boosts immune system response
3. Enhances circulation
4. Helps with better sleep during illness
5. No need for medication

The Instagram reel also suggested that the “scientific basis” for it is studies that show “hydrotherapy can effectively manage fever by improving blood flow and stimulating the immune system. It’s a method rooted in naturopathic principles, supporting the body’s natural healing processes”.

It also mentioned that, unlike over-the-counter fever medications, this remedy is natural and has no side effects. “It also encourages a holistic approach to managing illness without relying on pharmaceuticals,” it read.

It further suggested combining this method with other soothing practices like herbal teas with lemon and ginger, and if the child is over the age of one, then honey can be added. Ensure your child stays hydrated and comfortable during their illness.

Aghast, we turned to Dr Haricharan G, senior consultant physician, HoD internal medicine, Gleneagles Hospitals, Lakdi Ka Pul, Hyderabad for his insight. “The ‘wet sock method’ is a home remedy some people use to relieve fever. This method involves soaking a pair of thin cotton socks in cold water, wringing them out, and then putting them on the feet. A pair of dry wool socks is then placed over the wet socks, and the individual goes to bed. Proponents claim that this treatment can help reduce fever, improve circulation, and boost the immune system by stimulating the body’s natural healing processes. However, from a medical perspective, there is no scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of the wet sock treatment for fever reduction,” said Dr Haricharan.

Dr Haricharan noted that the treatment “may create a cooling sensation that can temporarily make the person feel more comfortable, but it does not address the underlying cause of the fever”.

“Fevers are typically a response to infection or inflammation. While home remedies like the wet sock method may provide a short-term relief, they can not replace conventional medical treatments. It is important to monitor fevers closely, especially in children, and seek a doctor’s advice when necessary. For significant or persistent fevers, consulting a doctor is essential to ensure appropriate diagnosis and treatment,” said Dr Haricharan.
