Who doesn’t love a heirloom with a story behind it? Well, Sara Ali Khan just proved they are not just hand-me-downs from within your family. While attending the Ambani family’s Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, the actor donned a Mayyur Girotra lehenga made with five to six vintage saris, all of them over 50 years old.

This stunning lehenga set, crafted from vintage brocade saris, showcases the beauty and versatility of recycled textiles. Styled by Ami Patel, the ensemble features a choli, an A-line lehenga, and a tissue silk dupatta.

The designer hand-wove the lehenga using 50-60-year-old saris he collected. By combining these multi-coloured vintage brocades, Girotra created an intricate and vibrant piece that captures the rich history and artistry of Indian textiles. The lehenga will inspire you to revive your mother’s old drapes sitting in the cupboard or under your beds into timeless and stylish garments.

“I strongly share a passion for collecting textiles. Textiles is more than just a hobby; it is a way to preserve history and craftsmanship, and we also believe in it as a brand,” the designer said in a video on Instagram, detailing the making of the outfit.

Sara’s blouse, a deep purple masterpiece, features a backless design with dori ties, intricate gold brocade embroidery, and gotta patti border. The sweetheart neckline, half-length sleeves, fitted bust, and cropped hem add to its allure.

The lehenga skirt, crafted from a vibrant mix of purple, green, and pink brocade saris, complements the blouse beautifully. Sara’s bronze gold tissue silk dupatta, adorned with pink borders and exquisite zardozi zari embroidery, is a true showstopper. She gracefully draped one end on her arm and pinned the other to her waist, adding a touch of elegance.

Sara’s not the only one to have revamped her vintage sari. Priyanka Chopra did it, too, last year for the launch of the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre.

Also styled by Ami Patel, Priyanka’s ensemble is also a stunning blend of vintage and modern elements. The outfit’s centerpiece is a sixty-year-old vintage Banarasi brocade sari crafted using silver threads and gold electroplating on khadi silk.

This exquisite sari is draped over a jewel-toned, molded body made from a unique, signature material. A sequin sheet holographic bustier, reflecting the nine colors of the ikat weave in the brocade, completes the ensemble.

This intricate creation took six months to complete, with the original vintage textile being handwoven in the traditional craft clusters of Varanasi.
