Can this viral makeup hack promise a sweat-proof base in this summer heat?

A makeup routine is contingent on how solid the base is — your skincare, followed by primer, foundation, concealer, and powder can make or break the rest of your look. While you might have heard of using ice cubes with your beauty sponge for a flawless product application, mixing foundation with ice cubes is a newer trend.

With hundreds of tips and tricks floating all over the internet, a makeup enthusiast may feel tempted to jump on the latest trend bandwagon. Digital creator Nidhi Uttam recently demonstrated this technique in an Instagram reel, mixing foundation with ice cubes and applying it on her face in an attempt to prevent her base from melting. Indianexpress.com consulted makeup artists to see if this trick is effective in India’s climate.

While most agreed that it is a trend that’s been going on, they revealed that the Indian audience isn’t much open to experimenting with such hacks as they don’t make the makeup last very long.

What do experts have to say?

Sabrina Suhail, founder of Tinge Cosmetics, pointed out that the success of this method depends on the foundation’s formulation.

“If your foundation is water-based that’s one thing, but if it’s silicone or oil-based, we know that oil doesn’t mix well with water. Thus, the product breaks down and coagulates, forming tiny clumps that refuse to blend into the skin,” she said.

She added that the main purpose of using a foundation is to get a natural skin-like coverage, and this hack gets you far away from it. The extreme heat in India, with temperatures reaching up to 45°C, worsens the issue, and leads to makeup melting off quickly.

“The internet is flooded with lots of beauty hacks but as a makeup artist, I have to say, sometimes it feels like everyone’s trying to follow each and everything,” said Hitesh Dewett, HOB makeup artistry trainer, Kylie Cosmetics.

“Don’t get me wrong, I love a good shortcut, but some trends, like the whole ice cube and foundation thing, can be more trouble than they’re worth,” he said.

Dewett said that while the ice cube hack might tighten pores temporarily, it generally leads to a diluted foundation that doesn’t last. He also shared an alternative—mixing foundation with water. “This ‘water-with-foundation’ hack promises a dewy, transfer-proof finish, but let’s be real, there is no magic bullet for sweat-proof makeup,” he said.

However, according to him, the right preparation and touch-ups, you can achieve a flawless summer look that lasts long.
