Have you ever woken up to a morning where everything goes wrong? The alarm doesn’t ring, toast gets burnt, oatmeal is over, and your clothes look like they’ve been through a war zone. Now, you must have managed to wake up and chose to skip breakfast, but wrinkled clothes could be unforgiving, especially when you are headed to the office.

We hope you never experience such mornings again, but just in case you do, here is a secret to remember before you spiral into chaos –– aluminum foil isn’t just for the kitchen. Trust us, this hack will save you precious time and be your secret weapon on those frantic, “everything’s falling apart” mornings.

“Using an aluminum foil while ironing doesn’t just improve the ironing experience and give you a neater press, but also helps in shortening the ironing time. Even though this hack hasn’t gained much popularity in India, it is widely used in the West,” said Pooja Gupta, founder at Spectrum Styles and fashion editor at TMM Magazine.

Explaining the hack in detail

But, there’s a method to this madness. Gupta explained the process of using aluminum foil in ironing –– start by removing the cloth cover from your ironing board and replace it with a layer of foil. Then, place the cloth back over the foil and iron your clothes as usual.

According to Gupta, the aluminum foil acts as a thermal conductor and essentially doubles as a second iron. “You don’t need to flip your garment to iron the other side—the foil does the job in one go. This saves you so much time,” she said, noting that this hack works best with cotton fabrics, though rayon and other blends may also yield good results. However, she advised against using it on fabrics like spandex, polyester, and lycra.

It is also important to check the iron’s temperature to avoid damaging your clothes. “Make sure the iron is set to a lower temperature to prevent any risk of ruining your garments,” Gupta said.
