Deepika Padukone has been on top of her fashion game lately, with maternity looks making us stop and stare and how! Be it bodycon dresses for fashion events, flowy kaftans for family brunch or resplendent Torani silks for the gala Ambani wedding, the Bollywood actor has left no stone unturned when it comes to flaunting her baby bump in style.

As the city of Mumbai loses itself in festive cheer, parents-to-be Padukone and Ranveer Singh were spotted at the Siddhivinayak Temple to seek blessings ahead of the delivery. While Singh opted for a simple cream kurta pajama set with gold-framed sunglasses, it was Deepika who got us swooning in an emerald green katan Banarasi silk sari from Banarasi Baithak.

What makes this sari special?

The brand took to Instagram stories to reveal that stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania sourced this ‘vintage revival’ piece as a gift to the couple to celebrate their journey as new parents, keeping in mind that green is the colour for fertility, prosperity and growth. Banarasi Baithak also added a series of posts detailing the work that went behind creating this piece. “The auspicious colour green was loved by the revered Meenakshi Amman. The special piece is dedicated to Maduraidevi,” it mentioned in a caption.

Legend goes that the Meenaskshi Temple in Madurai is dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi Amman, a form of Goddess Parvati, and her consort Sundareshwarar, a form of Lord Shiva.

Banarasi Baithak also shared that Anaita made sure not to touch scissors to the fabric and kept it untouched as a symbol of ‘ever-after’.

With wide borders and circular motifs all over, the sari is inspired from an almost century old piece in the same rich green shade. However, the tanchui details between the bootas were removed to make the sari slightly lighter. The first piece came off the loom after six months of labour.

Deepika chose to pair the five-yards with a matching blouse featuring a similar brocade border, and accessorised with a clean bun, tiny bindi, simple earrings and barely there nude makeup which kept the focus on the regal fabric adorning her. Her radiant smile added a touch of warmth to her look.
