‘Thought I was going to…’: Gordon Ramsay opens up about near-fatal bike crash

Gordon Ramsay, the 57-year-old star of The Kitchen Nightmares, has finally spoken out about the harrowing bike accident he endured in June, which left him seriously injured.

During an interview with Men’s Health published on Thursday, the host of Hell’s Kitchen revealed that he was riding his bike when he hit a “crater-like pothole.” The accident caused Ramsay’s bike to spin 180 degrees, throwing him off. He discovered that his helmet had cracked completely, resulting in injuries and blurry vision as he tried to fix his bike’s chain and finish his ride.

Recalling the terrifying incident, Ramsay said, “I bent down, started tightening up my helmet, and the whole thing had split. Then I was trying to look, and I could just see a blur of vision and blood everywhere.” “I honestly thought I was going to pass out, ” he adds.

Celebrity chef Justin Mandel managed to send an ambulance to the scene on a Connecticut road after Ramsay called him. After being admitted to the hospital, CT scans showed no bone injuries despite a large purple bruise extending from his waist to his ribs.

However, Ramsay was advised to undergo daily physiotherapy and lymphatic drainage treatments for his recovery.

“I couldn’t even put my f—king socks and pants on. Justin, he used to dress me in the morning. I felt like a f—king 95-year-old man. Asking a 30-year-old kid to put my f—king underpants on was embarrassing,” Ramsay remarked.

Ramsay is now well on the road to recovery and back to training—swimming and cycling. A veteran of multiple marathons, ultramarathons, and Half Ironmans, he attributes his recovery to his dedication to fitness and his resilient Scottish bones.

‘If I wasn’t fit and those bones weren’t strong, I’d be screwed,’ Ramsay says. ‘I’m going to put it back down to the fitness… I’m lucky to be here because I’m fit.’”

Ramsay first mentioned his bike accident on Instagram on Father’s Day, expressing his gratitude for surviving the ordeal. “I’m in pain and it’s been a brutal week. But, I’m getting through it,” he stated at the time.

In his post, the renowned chef highlighted the importance of wearing a helmet, showing his severe bruise. “Those incredible trauma surgeons, doctors, nurses in the hospitals looked after me this week. They were amazing, but honestly, you’ve got to wear helmets,” he asserted.
