Vice President Kamala Harris is running for the office of the President of the United States for a second time, campaigning vigorously against former President Donald Trump. The Indian-origin politician, representing the Democratic Party, has strong support from her friends and family, and it’s evident.

In a recent viral video, actor Kerry Washington addressed the audience, clarifying any debate about pronouncing Harris’s name. “Some folks struggle, or pretend to struggle, with pronouncing our future president’s name. Confusion is understandable. Disrespect is not!”

Washington then called on Harris’s great-nieces, Amara and Leela, daughters of Harris’s niece Meena Harris, to demonstrate. In a heart-warming display, Amara said, “First you say ‘Kama,’ like a comma in a sentence,” followed by Leela saying, “Then you say ‘La,’ like ‘la-la-la-la-la.’”

With the pronunciation cleared up, if you’re curious about the meaning behind her name, we’ve got you covered.

indianexpress.com spoke with celebrity astrologer Pandit Jagannath Guruji to decode the symbolism of “Kamala”. He said, “Kamala is a name with Indian and Sanskrit roots. With a name derived from the Sanskrit word for “lotus flower,” they are bound to bloom and thrive.”

He explained that the lotus flower’s symbolism is around the plant’s ability to produce beautiful flowers despite growing in swampy, muddy, and often unpleasant water. “The delicate petals unfold, reminding us that beauty may exist even in the darkest of situations,” he said.

According to him, the lotus flower’s ability to create several flowers from the depths of the water makes it a symbol of rebirth.
