Are you a coffee connoisseur? Are your mornings incomplete without the rich aroma of freshly roasted beans? If you spend a considerable chunk of your income at your local craft coffee shop or scrutinise the quality of beans at every café you visit, this question––if you know the difference between dry and wet cappuccino––should not make you sweat. But if you’re unsure, don’t worry—indianexpress.com consulted café owners and a chef to clarify things.

What’s a dry cappuccino?

A dry cappuccino is made with espresso and milk foam, without any steamed milk.

“The term ‘dry’ refers to the absence of liquid milk, making the drink lighter and giving it a stronger coffee flavour,” explained celebrity chef Ananya Banerjee. “In contrast, ‘wet’ refers to a higher ratio of steamed milk to foam, creating a creamier texture and taste similar to a latte.”

Rahul Shetty, director, La Mer Events and Hospitality, overseeing Azule in Goa, said, “A dry cappuccino has a stronger, more pronounced espresso flavour due to less steamed milk and more froth, making it ideal for those who enjoy a bold coffee experience. A wet cappuccino, on the other hand, is creamier and smoother, appealing to those who prefer a mellower coffee taste.”

Which is the healthier option?

According to Shetty, if you’re looking to cut calories, a dry cappuccino is your best bet, as it contains less milk. If you prefer a richer, creamier coffee, a wet cappuccino can be a delightful indulgence that still fits within a balanced diet.

“For everyday consumption, both have their advantages. Personally, I find a dry one to be the better option when I want a strong, aromatic cup without the extra calories,” said Gaurav Shetty, director at Peninsula Group of Hospitality, which manages Mitron Cafe.

Banerjee said those watching their weight generally prefer a dry to wet one. “Since it has minimal milk, it helps reduce overall calorie intake while still providing the rich flavour of espresso,” she said.

However, she also said that the healthiness of a dry and wet cappuccino largely depends on individual dietary preferences and needs.
