Starting your day with a glass of salt water is a practice that has garnered attention for its potential health benefits.

When prepared correctly and consumed in moderation, this morning ritual may offer several advantages for the body. From hydration support to possible improvements in digestive function, the consumption of salt water has become a topic of interest in health and wellness circles.

Sadhna Singh, senior nutritionist at Herenow Official, says, “While plain water is essential for hydration, salt water offers the added benefit of replenishing electrolytes. This can be particularly beneficial for those who exercise regularly, sweat heavily, or live in hot climates.”

Herbal teas, she says, can provide various health benefits depending on the herbs used, but they don’t offer the same electrolyte replenishment as salt water. “Combining salt water with herbal tea or consuming them at different times can offer a well-rounded approach to hydration and overall health.”

Five health benefits of drinking salt water in the morning

Singh says that drinking salt water in the morning may offer a few specific advantages:

Hydration and Electrolyte Balance

*Salt water helps replenish electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and chloride, which are essential for hydration, nerve function, and muscle contractions.

*It may be especially beneficial after exercise or sweating, as these activities deplete electrolytes.

Digestive Health

*Salt water can stimulate the production of digestive enzymes and hydrochloric acid in the stomach, aiding digestion and nutrient absorption.

*It may also help alleviate constipation by drawing water into the intestines, softening stools, and promoting regularity.

Skin Health

*Salt water’s mineral content may help improve skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis by reducing inflammation and promoting healing.

*It may also contribute to overall skin health by hydrating and balancing the skin’s pH levels.

 Respiratory Health

*Gargling with salt water can help soothe sore throats and reduce inflammation in the respiratory tract.

*It may also help clear mucus and alleviate symptoms of allergies and colds.

Detoxification

*Salt water can act as a mild diuretic, increasing urine production and potentially aiding in flushing out toxins from the body.

Type of salt and recommended for this practice

“Opt for unrefined salts like Himalayan pink salt or sea salt, which contain trace minerals that can offer additional health benefits. Avoid table salt, which is heavily processed and stripped of these minerals,” recommends Singh.

Start with a small amount, she continues, about 1/4 teaspoon of salt dissolved in a cup of lukewarm water. You can gradually increase the amount to ½ teaspoon if tolerated. However, it’s important to listen to your body and not exceed your tolerance.

Potential risks and precautions

While drinking salt water in moderation is generally safe for most people, Singh asserts that  there are some risks to consider:

High Blood Pressure: Individuals with hypertension or a history of high blood pressure should consult their doctor before incorporating salt water into their routine.

Kidney Problems: Excessive salt intake can burden the kidneys. Those with kidney issues should be cautious and seek medical advice.

Dehydration: Ironically, drinking too much salt water can lead to dehydration. It’s crucial to balance salt water intake with plain water consumption throughout the day.

Digestive Issues: Some people may experience bloating or diarrhea from salt water consumption. If this occurs, reduce the amount or discontinue use.
