Malaika Arora swears by simple remedies and secrets when it comes to skin health. As such, she recently spilled the beans about the one skincare mantra she swears by. “A lot of people ask me the secret to glowing skin. As soon as you wake up, your skin is at its best because you have slept the night, you have used some of the best products. That’s the best time for your skin to heal, recover and rejuvenate. So, when you wake up in the morning, your skin is at its most supple. So, don’t wash it,” Malaika told Femina India.

According to the actor-dancer, one should either let their face be or spray a natural coolant. “You should let it be, or probably spray a coolant like rose water on your skin which will keep it nice and fresh. This is what gives you the natural, fresh, and dewy look as soon as you wake up,” shared Malaika, adding that she drinks 1 litre of warm water with lemon as soon as she wakes up.

So, should you not wash your face as soon as you wake up?

Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinic disagreed with Malaika’s suggestion and said that when you sleep, the cells start to regenerate resulting in a buildup of dead skin cells, which is why it becomes essential to wash your, face right after waking up.

“It also provides a fresh canvas to apply skincare or makeup products for effective results. However, if you have dry or extremely sensitive skin, then washing your face in the morning can strip out all the essential oils from your face making it look dehydrated,” elucidated Dr Kapoor.

Dr Kapoor said that people with oily or acne-prone skin are encouraged to wash their face in the morning as it can flush out excessive oil present in the skin and prevent skin breakouts. “Avoid using extremely hot water for washing your face as it can cause severe burnout. Instead, try using lukewarm water for better results,” said Dr Kapoor.
