TV host Paras Tomar vouches for this home remedy to ‘remove dandruff in 7 days’; expert says, ‘not validated by enough evidence’

Dandruff — caused by multiple factors like sweat, using chemical-based shampoos, and exposure to dirt and dust — is a common problem that can be embarrassing and frustrating in equal measure. As such, those facing the issue are always looking for instant solutions. So, when we spotted actor, TV host, and content creator Paras Tomar’s post stating that combining water, cinnamon powder, and apple cider vinegar to make a spray is a potent solution, we wanted to know its effectiveness.

In 1 glass of water, add cinnamon powder and apple cider vinegar, shared Tomar, stating that apple cider vinegar will balance the pH level of the scalp which will help reduce the flakiness. “Cinnamon is known for invigoration and hair growth. Blood circulation helps improve dryness, which reduces dandruff. The spray applied over seven days (overnight) will also improve the hair texture,” claimed Tomar.

But what do experts have to say?

While it is believed that apple cider vinegar helps reduce dandruff, and itchy scalp and promotes hair growth, Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist, and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics, said it is important to understand how these ingredients individually work. “The acid content in apple cider vinegar is known to balance out the scalp’s pH level which further stops the formation of dandruff due to its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Moreover, cinnamon is a natural remedy to remove dandruff due to its anti-fungal properties that help to deal with dandruff-causing fungi Malassezia and is believed to prevent breakage and promote hair growth,” said Dr Kapoor.

However, it is “not validated by enough evidence”, stressed Dr Kapoor. “There is no scientific research backing up the idea of directly applying apple cider vinegar on the scalp. Excessive use of cinnamon on hair can cause scalp irritation, burning sensation, itchiness, and redness. The ACV has a pungent smell and can lead to stinky hair,” said Dr Shareefa Chause, dermatologist and cosmetologist, Shareefa’s Skin Care Clinic.

Experts urge that it is essential to understand that ingredients like cinnamon and apple cider vinegar are not suitable for everyone and should not be used without expert advice. “Don’t opt for it just because you saw a random social media post as what suits one individual may not be a good option for others. Acetic acid present in ACV can be harsh on your scalp and worsen scalp problems and hair damage if applied directly,” said Dr Kapoor.
