Autistic child’s mom claims air fryer’s ‘metal toxicity’ led his medical tests to show ‘high levels for antimony’; know more

A TikTok video of a mother narrating her ordeal about discovering her autistic son’s medical reports suggesting high levels of metal toxicity, allegedly from air fryer use, has been doing the rounds on social media. The mom blogger claimed that her son’s blood work showed high levels of antimony, a metallic element that is used in many electronic devices like air fryers. Mincing no words, and said, “Throw your air fryers out. They are full of toxic heavy metals that are getting into your food. Even those that are made with stainless steel. It has aluminum components and the actual wire that plugs into your wall has a flame retardant coating that will also affect your food.”

Adding that she prepares “most of my son’s meals in this machine”, she continued: “Waffles, nuggets, tots, etc, every single day for 2.5 years! No wonder his blood work showed high levels for antimony”, further questioning whether it could have been the trigger for his condition.

“While genetics load the gun for autism, environment pulls the trigger. Having this high of a toxic load as a developing baby is detrimental. Trace amounts of heavy metals majorly affect your IQ. He also has one copy of the MTHFR gene which makes it hard for his body to expel toxins, meaning his body stores 50 per cent of toxins instead of expelling them,” she added.

She further claimed, “Now that I know what was poisoning him daily, I have eliminated it and have officially begun to detox him from heavy metals”.

Users took to the comments section, with one stating, “In the screenshot you posted, it mentioned arsenic. My functional medicine doctor also found arsenic in my blood and said no level is safe. I haven’t been able to discover the source until your video.” Another wrote, “Speak your truth! And don’t let anybody silence you. Because now that I think about it, that’s about right when I started getting really sick and I had aluminum in my system that was off the chart.”

We turned to a nutrition expert to understand more about air fryers and their effect on health.

Air fryers have become extremely popular because of their ability to cook crispy and delicious food in less oil. However, there is still a concern about their toxicity, said Jinal Patel, dietitian, Zynova Shalby Hospital.

While refraining from commenting on the unproven claim made by the blogger, Patel said that air fryer is known to release chemicals, such as acrylamide. “Remember, when food is cooked at high temperatures in an air fryer, acrylamide — a known carcinogen — forms, especially when starchy foods undergo browning or crisping processes like frying,” said Patel.

Also, non-stick coating found in air fryers has perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) released in the air and food during cooking, leading to thyroid problems, liver damage, and even cancer, she mentioned.

According to Patel, “Air fryers are known to release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when overheated”. “One must choose safer cookware materials, and cooking methods like roasting or steaming,” Patel said.
