The world of skincare is always throwing up ingredients and trends for the aficionados to catch on. Amidst the hype for fermented skincare, saccharomyces filtrate is the latest to join the list. What is this new ingredient, and should you be incorporating it in your skincare routine?

In conversation with Dr Vaggu Anand Kumar, consultant dermatologist, cosmetologist and hair transplant surgeon, KIMS Hospital, Hyderabad, indianexpress.com found out the merits of this filtrate.

“Saccharomyces ferment filtrate is askincare ingredient derived from t he fermentation process of Saccharomyces, a type of yeast. This process breaks down the yeast into smaller molecules, resulting in a filtrate rich in essential nutrients such as amino acids, vitamins, beta-glucans, and minerals,” explained Kumar.

“Saccharomyces ferment filtrate is highly effective in retaining moisture, ensuring that the skin remains hydrated and supple, and the skin’s moisture balance is maintained. The beta-glucans in the filtrate support and strengthen the skin’s natural barrier, which further protects the skin from environmental aggressors and limits trans epidermal water loss,” he added.

According to him, the filtrate is packed with antioxidants that combat free radicals, reducing oxidative stress on the skin and minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Saccharomyces ferment filtrate helps improve skin tone and texture, contributing to a brighter and more even complexion.

Points to note

Dr Kumar recommended always performing a patch test and being consistent in using this filtrate as part of daily skincare regimen. As this ingredient works well with other skincare products, he suggested layering it with serums, moisturisers, and sunscreens.

“Overusing any skincare product can potentially cause irritation. Therefore, avoid combining the filtrate with strong exfoliants or other harsh active ingredients without professional guidance or consulting a dermatologist,” he added.

Who should avoid

“If you have extremely sensitive skin or any specific yeast allergies, consult with a dermatologist before using products containing this filtrate to avoid potential reactions. Individuals with active skin infections or conditions such as eczema or psoriasis should seek medical advice before incorporating new products into their regimen,” said Kumar.
