Many celebrities have opened up about their pregnancy and postpartum journey, but leading that list is actor Sonam Kapoor. The Dilli 6 actor, who welcomed her firstborn, son Vayu Kapoor Ahuja, in 2022, recently revealed the reason behind gaining 35 kilos during pregnancy. “When I got pregnant, I was over 35. I had taken progesterone shots in the first 3 months of pregnancy. So, you gain a lot of weight with it,” shared Kapoor, 38, in an interview with mom vlogger Tanya on her YouTube channel.

Kapoor also shared that her diet included “drinking lots of water”, and eating “a lot of fruits like watermelon and mango”. “All that helped in the pregnancy. Moisturiser helps but you need to hydrate from the inside,” added Kapoor.

How progesterone shots work in the body.

Progesterone shots, often prescribed in the first three months of pregnancy to support the pregnancy in cases of miscarriage history or other complications, can lead to weight gain due to several physiological effects. “Firstly, progesterone increases water retention, causing noticeable weight gain as the body holds onto more fluid. Secondly, it stimulates appetite, leading to higher calorie intake and subsequent weight gain. Additionally, hormonal changes triggered by progesterone can prompt the body to store more fat, particularly around the abdomen,” said Dr Priyanka Suhag, consultant, dept of obstetrics and gynaecology, CK Birla Hospital (R), Delhi.

For women over 35, the use of progesterone shots requires careful consideration due to an increased risk of complications such as gestational diabetes and hypertension, necessitating closer prenatal monitoring, noted the expert. “The decision to administer progesterone should be tailored based on the individual’s health history and current condition,” Dr Suhag mentioned.

Not all pregnant women need progesterone shots, according to Dr Suhag. “They are typically prescribed to those with a history of miscarriage, those undergoing certain fertility treatments like IVF, or women with a short cervix to reduce preterm birth risk,” said Dr Suhag.

Consulting a healthcare provider for personalised advice and discussing potential side effects or concerns is crucial for making informed decisions regarding progesterone use during pregnancy, added Dr Suhag.
